Doom was an extremely popular game when it launched. As the successor to the also popular Wolfenstein 3D, Doom brought a new level of realism with mouse look, and the ability to have multiple 'floors' (Wolf3D was played all on one level).
The game was distributed as Shareware, of which the first level, "Knee Deep in the Dead" was free to play. To receive the other episodes you had to pay Id Software.

How to Setup
To configure the game for your hardware, run the provided setup.exe utility. You have the following options:
4) Select Sound Effects device:
Problems
Symptom: I am getting no music or sound effects when running Doom from Windows NT or 2000.
Cause: The original game implements a POPF instruction that does not work under NT-based operating systems. They implemented a workaround in XP to allow it run with music and sound effects, but very poorly (the game runs slowly).
Resolution:
Run the game with no sound or music, or get "Final DOOM", which works fine under XP.
Symptom: I get 'Insufficient Memory' but I'm running this on a machine with 4 MB of RAM!
Cause: Doom really does try to acquire all 4 MB, so if you have device drivers and other TSRs loaded, these are probably reducing the amount of available RAM for the game to use.
Resolution:
Reboot your machine without device drivers loaded and retry. In MS-DOS 6.0 and above, you can press and hold F5 during boot to bypass CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files completely.
Symptom: Version 1.0 of the game crashes just after the DOS4GW line.
Cause: You have a motherboard with an OPTi chipset. These are known to cause issues with this game.
Resolution: Go into the AMI BIOS and switch off "Hidden Refresh" under the Advanced Chipset Setup menu, and try again.
To Quit the Game
Hit ESC to bring up the game menu. Then use the cursor keys to move the highlight down to 'Quit Game' and hit Enter.
